Jodhpur- the former capital of Marwar state was founded in 1459 by Rao
Jodha, who claimed descent from Lord Rama. The massive fort, Mehrangarh came
first and around it grew the city of Jodhpur protected by a high stone wall
with seven gates and countless bastions. Today, the city has grown to become
the second largest city of Rajasthan while still maintaining it's medieval
character. Jodhpur stands sentinel to the Thar desert and is a gateway to
the wonderland of sand dunes and shrubs, rocky terrain and thorny trees

tradition back to life in the present century - thus being able to maintain
the past glory. It specialize in Colonial furniture, period furniture,
antique reproductions, artifacts, decorative, ethnic arts, and handicrafts.
Exciting Excursion
One of the exciting excursion in Jodhpur is always a Jeep safari to one of
the picturesque villages of the Bishnoi community. The rustic Bishnois are,
traditionally, very environment conscious and animal-lovers. One can see
herds of deer grazing fearlessly in the village farms. A large number of
migratory birds also come here in the season.
Umed Bhawan Palace : Popularly called Chittar Palace by the local
public, the foundation of this grand piece of architecture was laid on 18th
nov. 1929 by Maharaja Umed Singh. Made on the Chittar Hills in South Eastern
direction of the City, this palace took 16 years and one crore twenty one
lac rupees for completion.
Mehrangarh Fort : Rao Jodha laid the foundation of Mehrangarh Fort
on 13th May , 1459. This magnificent Fort on a 400ft. high hill can be seen
from a great distance. It is said that when the sky becomes clear after
rains, Mehrangarh can be seen from 100 kms. from Jalore Fort.
Jaswant Thada : On the way down from the fort, is Jaswant Thada, the
graceful marble cenotaph of Jodhpur's maharajas. The tranquil feeling
returns as you sit on the steps looking out at the small lake below
Udai Mandir : Its a great building from architectural point of view.
The upper part of the gate is made of carved sandstone. On a huge platform,
the main temple is constructed, supported by 102 pillars.
